Your best bet is to just do a fresh install of Linux, or Windows, whatever you want to run. It sounds like the Vista partition was the main partition, with the XP as the extended partition. And you can’t boot to an extended partition by itself.
So your best bet is to just do a clean install if Xp, or Linux. Or both.

I’ve not done this before. However, I would likely strongly consider using the grub installer of the live linux cd to run your Windows and install Linux Ubuntu over the and/or share it with the Vista partition.

You’ll need to fix the master boot record.
The way I usually do it, is to get a Windows 98 boot floppy or CD. Copy FDISK.EXE onto it. Then boot to the Floppy and run “fdisk /mbr” this repairs the Master Boot Record.
You can do it through the XP recovery console. Just run “Fixboot”.
I’m including a link to the recovery console support page on Microsoft’s site.
E-mail me if you have questions. I’ll try to help if I can.
Good luck.
