Unbuntu? I have an old computer with windows xp on it what would be the best way to install unbuntu?

Hi, As as avid firefox user, I’m curious about other open source software availible. I’ve heard alot of good things about unbuntu and want to try it out. I have an older computer just sitting around, and want to know what I need to do to get unbuntu up and running. It has windows installed if I go to the ubunto website and download it will it automatically wipe windows off ?

What I need to know are the steps to take to properly download unbuntu, when windows is currently installed.

Thanks in advance

  1. there’s a live cd version of the program that allows you to use it without the need of installing it. just insert the cd and you’ve got it. other programs on your pc won’t be erased. if you have contacts, you can get it from them. it’s free anyway. Or check out the link below…

Hi, it would have helped us if u told us the specs of ur computer. Remember when u use Linux, its very different from Windows so u will have quite a lot of learning to do. If u r not having a little bit of knowledge about computers and Linux and just want to install Linux because u hear good things about it then don’t install it. As soon as something goes wrong u will be crying to go back. If u do want to install it then just follow these instructions:
1.download ubuntu iso image using a torrent which makes sure u receive a good image otherwise so large downloads can be corrupted.
    2.veryify its md5sum, very important.
3.burn the disc image onto a cd, and reboot.
4.then choose option check disk for errors and make sure there r no errors.
5.it will reboot again and choose the first option and u will enter live cd mode.
In Live mode u can check out Ubuntu Linux and see if u like it. Then choose the installation option on the desktop to install.
Learn how to make partitions by searching on yahoo for tutorials as basically Linux needs 3 partitions which r “/”,”/home”, and a “swap” partition.
The rest of the installation is very easy.
    Good Luck!

  3. The best way for you to do it would be to use the wubi installer.

  4. Downloading a Linux distribution will never wipe off your Windows installation. How old is your computer? If it is old enough like only 256 meg RAM and such, go for Xubuntu. It is built for such computers.

To install any of Ubuntu/Kubuntu/Xubuntu, download the iso file, burn the CD/DVD. Go to disk management under administrative tools from Control Panel. There, delete a partition that you can spare for Linux.

Insert the Linux CD/DVD, reboot the computer and make the BIOS settings right to boot it from the CD/DVD. Ubuntu is both a live CD as well as an installation medium in one. Try using it for a while. If you like it, click on the install icon and pretty much blindly follow what it says and you should be done with it.

If you have a decent Internet connection, visit http://www.goodbye-microsoft.com to start installing Linux. This site installs Debian. This is very much like Ubuntu. Try this if you are not fixated on Ubuntu. You will have the choice to choose the desktop manager for your old computer. If the RAM is low, choose Xfce4 or Enlightenment.
