Try enabling OSS, Alsa sound properties.

ubuntu which version your are talking of
is it 7.04 or 7.10 or 8.04
then this question could be put up to launchpad, ubuntu community will certainly help you or it can be a bug as far as I know i never had a problem regarding sound or video
just see that it is not muted or use audacious music player in ubuntu or re install your sound card driver for linux if at all they have one
that should sove ur problem

Might just be a bug with the distro of Ubuntu, try Mandriva instead. That card should work with ALSA driver just a few mixer problems. The other thing would be to try plug your speakers into another jack, sometimes they get the Jacks screwed up on surround sound sound cards.

probably the sound module for ur sound card is doesnt get loaded into memory.
