  1. disable the screen saver. If you want a screen saver, have the OS instead turn the monitor off only and leave evberything else untouched.

go into start|control panel|power and check your current settings. if they are not to your liking, change them.

Have you looked at your CMOS SETUP settings lately? within are some sleep parameters.

You may be experiencing what happens when the CR2032 motherboard battery dies they last for several years, but I have never kept track of exactly how long. it’s a bit of a pain to replace, but it is do-able, just avoid shorting the battery out. you can get the battery from any office supply store like Office Max, Staples, Office Depot. Or if you can’t find one, go to a computer store.
    1. Go into CMOS SETUP and record on paper all the parameters you can find.
    2. replace the battery.
    3. Go into CMOS SETUP and restore from paper all the parameters you found.
    4. make any changes you need regarding the sleep/standby state.
    cost: $4

next thing to try: get a video card. make sure it is compatible with your dell, since dell power supplies are notoriously low-wattage and don’t usually handle today’s video cards. you will probably need to order the part from dell.
    1. install the video drivers first before putting the video card in, if possible.
    2. install the card.
once you have the video card installed, you will need to do some shuffling. you will be attempting to do 2 things at the same time (or in some sort of sequence, if necessary):
    - move the monitor over to the new video card
    - change CMOS SETUP so that it uses the AGP port instead of onboard video
it may take a few tries to get it working.
    cost:$80-120
If dell doesn’t offer one any more, you can get by with a VERY low end PCI video card, such as a radeon 9200 or 9250 from ebay. or you can try the geforce mx4000. it only requires a 250W power supply.
