I have a Dell Inspiron 9400, running Windows XP, and I want to run Linux instead.
Can someone tell me if my laptop will accept it, and what distribution to put on my Live CD?

Ubuntu 9.04 is solid, and should work best with your hardware

My Inspiron 1501 does just fine with Slackware. With a live cd, you’ve got nothing to lose because you don’t have to install it to try it out. If you’ve never used Linux before, and aren’t comfortable with a command line interface, you’ll probably want to try Ubuntu first. Or possibly Debian or Fedora.

Wubi is free – it lets you try Ubuntu Linux without having to get rid of XP so you can see how it runs on your laptop. You install Wubi in the normal way but when you restart your laptop, you get the choice of booting into Windows or Ubuntu. To get rid of Ubuntu, just uninstall Wubi from within XP in the normal way.

Yes definitely you can run any distribution of linux on your laptop.
I suggest using Ubuntu 8.10 (9.04 is quite buggy) if you are a novice.
You may also try to install it within windows (Wubi Install) like any other application without the need to create separate partitions and do complicated stuff. Best of luck trying linux !

You can install Ubuntu 9.04 using Wubi installer http://wubi-installer.org/
No need to burn a CD. Just run the installer, enter a password for the new account, and click “Install”.
You keep Windows as it is, Wubi only adds an extra option to boot into Ubuntu. Wubi does not require you to modify the partitions of your PC, or to use a different bootloader, and does not install special drivers. It works just like any other application.
Wubi keeps most of the files in one folder, and if you do not like it, you can simply uninstall it as any other application.

Short Answer: Xubuntu http://www.xubuntu.org/
Reason for that: Ubuntu is great! I recommend the 8.x version, but Ubuntu, or any of it’s family (Xubunutu works great on slow machines, Kubuntu is pretty.) I had some trouble with Ubuntu 9.x, but that may be my old machine made for XP, and not the operating system. It did work great on my Laptop that also runs Vista. 8.x is the way to go with an XP machine, or just get the new Xubuntu.
