There is no obvious reason why you could not run puppy linux on that computer. Since you have the live-cd all you have to do is boot from it a see how it works. It will not make any changes to your hard drive while running as live-cd. It will run slowly since it is running from the cd and not the hard drive. If you install it it will run at least as quickly as any other program you have or as windows. If some piece of hardware (e.g. wireless) doesn’t work when using the live-cd it will not work out of the box when you install it. You would have to find some drivers or edit a configuration file for it to work. With help I’m sure all the hardware will work.
If you have problems with puppy linux there are a number of other live-cds that you could try. http://distrowatch.com/search.php
Good luck
