Power Supply Question?

I have a PC that was left on, when I came home it was off. It would not restart. It would POST and then return a HDD not found error. The primary HDD is not recognized even in the BIOS. Last night I used a Linux live CD to boot and check the secondary HDDs data.
Today I tried to boot from HDD, CD, and floppy, nothing works, but it still POSTs, and I can change things in the BIOS. I have this > http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16899705002 < PSU tester and when I test the PSU the -5v fails to test.

Is the PSU the problem or is there another issue that could be causing the?

    Power Supply

the reason it is giving you an error is because the autorun is desinged to be run on a windows machene

  3. Check the cables and the connections inside ur CPU.check the power cable connected to the hard disk. This might help.

  4. To troubleshoot this I would disconnect all the drives from the system and go into bios and set everything to defaults. Then power off the machine connecting one device at a time starting with the optical drive.

Since you have a PSU tester, it may also have a port to test the power cables that supply power to your devices. Failing the -5V test is quite normal if you do not see a white wire in the main ATX connector or there is one wire missing. If the connector test fails, replace the power supply.

After determining the PS is likely ok, power off the system. You will want to completely disconnect the data cable at both ends, the motherboard and at the drive end as well as re-seat the power cable that goes to the drives as you add them back into the system. But first disconnect all data cables at the motherboard end.

Reseat the power cable and data cable on the optical drive itself first, then connect the data cable to the motherboard and power up the system.

Go into bios after the optical drive is attached and see if it’s listed…then try to boot to it using your Live CD. If it’s not listed, power off the system and connect the data cable to another port on the motherboard and try again.

If it still doesn’t detect the optical drive…disconnect it and try one of the hard drives and repeat the same steps as the optical drive.

If after trying all your major devices and they are not detected I would suspect that the motherboard is bad. If you put your finger on the chipset it may be unusually warm most likely also.

If you get one device to be detected and the other devices use the same type of data cable, use it to test the other similiar ports. for example test all IDE ports using a detected IDE drive and all Sata Ports using a detected Sata Device.
