  1. If you really love your girlfriend, buy her a new computer =) Besides, going that far to fix it up, how long can it last? really? Overall it would be cheaper to just get a new system, and stick in the old hard drive to save your (her) stuff. Oh, and its not the hard drive thats making it freeze. Or the power supply for that matter.

It might be the cpu, since you seemed to have destroyed it in the process, but you said you got a different one anyways.

I kind of doubt its the video card, and I’m leaning toward either the motherboard, or possibly the incompatibility with the motherboard and memory, either type of memory on the mobo, or the different types of memory that the mobo doesn’t like (you should really stick to just one brand).

I had a computer that shut down on me as soon as it loaded windows. For the longest time, I couldn’t figure it out, but i eventually found that it was the heatsink that wasn’t properly set on the cpu, which made the cpu overheat and shut down. The heatsink had tore out of the hole that was holding it down. That was my socket 478, by the way

Either way, socket 478 is not only old, its discontinued. A more popular nowadays one would be the 775. If you switch mobos for the not discontinued socket type, that means switching cpu, and might as well get ddr2 or 3 memory…etc… get a new system.

I agree, if you love you girlfriend you would buy her new computer; but if I was you ans since it seen like you know how to put one together I would do that. You can us the old hard drive to but I would buy a bigger one and us the old one as a backup hard drive.

Try this one I order it my self and it is plenty fast.

    and

http://www.directron.com/ds-35226g.html (this a good CPU and it is cheap).

Together it only cost me $167.00

If you do go that whey we will need to reinstall the O/S because the O/S is keyed to the old CPU and Motherboard.

Go here and get a diagnostic test for your particular HDD: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287

Or swap out your HDD (after doing a image/clone of the entire HDD)

Download and run ccleaner at: ccleaner.com

Look into your Control Panel and select Power Options and look to make sure you don’t have anything set to turn off the HDD after a certain period of time….I have mine set to “never” turn off (while my computer is on that is).

Finally, go to cdfreaks.com and register and post your problem. They are VERY helpful.

    Good luck….
