SliTaz is probably not the best choice for beginners. Ubuntu would be much better, and it would be easier for you to figure out how to copy files off of your hard drive.

if you download Ubuntu and make a live CD you would be able to get the files much easier.
I can help you with that.
in Ubuntu go to Places>Computer
then click on file system>Host
Now you are in your windows folders
you can go to Documents and Settings and find your files from there
