ok heres what im doing. i’ve just downloaded linux and ran the live cd and im gonna stick with it. so i want to install it and i just bought a external harddrive (320 GB simpletech harddrive) because i dont want to partition my drive and i want to install it on the external harddrive, but i dont know if its bootable or not so everytime i boot my machine and the usb cable is plugged in it’ll boot up in ubuntu and vice versa. but if dosent work then i’ll just have to transfer my data to the external and partition my disk with majority of the space. i dont know if i eplained it well enough. i hope you get my point. thanks.
i have windows xp by the way.
ok i checked my bios, and i dont have the usb option, what do i do? should i backup my primary hdd to my external and partition my primary and install linux.
You should be able to do this by setting the boot order in your BIOS. There should be an option for USB in the boot options, just make sure that is the first selection. Here is a short web page about BIOS settings if you are unfamiliar with them.
