aaah ubuntu, i think you’ll like it a lot mate, it’s my primary os these days, works like a charm
you might well find the oboard gfx on your hp will handle the desktop effects like beryl, i’ve got the effects working on my dell laptop which has old integrated gfx (the predecessor to the gma950
) you’ll find ubuntu is very light on resources

About the codec, the reason that Ubuntu doesn’t play MP3s by default is because the MP3 codec is proprietary (closed source) and most Linux distrobutions endorse the use of open source codecs

I just downloaded the Ubuntu 7.10 Desktop i386 ISO and i burned it using Disk Utility. But for some reason after Ubuntu starts loading (Live CD) it says failed. I am wondering what’s wrong. I’m using an Intel core Duo iMac (early 2006). Did I download the wrong version? Should I have downloaded the amd64 version? Any help would be nice. Thanks

Burn at a slowest speed possible. You downloaded the right version but likely had a bad burn. Burning at a slower speed makes the disc jiggle around less. If a first you don’t succeed, try try again.

Integrated graphics work fine with Compiz Fusion. Works right out of the box on Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon

i have a hp laptop and i installed kubuntu and ubuntu the only issues i had was the wifi driver’s
btw i have a hp 530 laptop £200 and it haase a intergrated gcard (intel) and compiz and beryl work fine

it must be an error… when you burn it you have to make sure the size of the iso file is correct.. maybe some data could be lost

the internet browsing is WAY FASTER on limux, it loads all the pages faster than firefox on windows.

it depends if you have got your graphics drivers installed. if you have, goto system, preferences, appearance and then on a tab called visual effects, set it to the last one

To dual boot Ubuntu and OS X on a Mac, you will need to install them both and then enter the startup disk settings in each OS and play around with them a bit.
