I’m not great with linux, but i would think the current version of Red Hat would probably be considered the best.
Last I knew of, it was Fedora Core.
I think it already comes with software to play .WMVs
Check out http://www.redhat.com/
Good luck!

hi, Im RHCE(red hat certified engg.) . i would suggests u to choose RedhatLinux 4.0 or Fedora Core 5 which have good functionality to do ur work. There are so many different falvours also available of linux such as mandrake, suse, ubtu, lindows, solaris 10 etc.
for playing wmv file u can use Mplayer, Vlc player,XMMS or Xine they all play wmv format files.

First and foremost, there are many many many linux distributions that are better than what you have now. It is only a matter of diving in and going the whole 9 yards. To start off, try Fedora or the like. They are very user friendly and you’ll really enjoy yourself.
In order to play windows media files on a non-windows machine you’ll need a player and then the proper codecs for decoding and reading the files.
There are two options that have worked for me. I’ve had good experience using MPlayer on both Fedora (Core 4) and Gentoo. MPlayer has a nice list of supported input formats and runs well. Another good one is VLC, it has worked for me as well.
