so basically if you have knoppix on a cd, you can boot it from the cd and not have it install to your hard drive and delete your current operating system?

does anyone know if this works in a laptop?

Yes!
Just boot from CD (see your manual if necessary) and run Linux “Live” entirely from CD without installing Linux on your system – and without deleting your current OS.

To see info on antivirus, do an Internet search (Google or other) for “linux antivirus” and read several results.
To test Linux “Live” CD download, run md5sum checker program.
