<description>Yes. It is an excellent idea. In the future it will be much more common for people to carry their own operating systems around with them.

There are versions of Linux that are made to do this. You should have a Linux live CD and a thumb drive -- or if you are working on computers that can boot from a USB thumb drive, you can install the operating system to the thumb drive. I run Damn Small Linux (a 50MB operating system) from my thumb drive and it works great. I save my files right back to the thumb drive.

Check out Puppy Linux. You can even make a multi-session disk with Puppy so that you can write back to the CD.

The latest version of Ubuntu comes on a live CD that can be installed. It runs very fast for a live CD. You can save your files on a thumb drive but it might take some tweaking.

Some of the live CDs have a menu option that saves your settings to the thumb drive when you logoff. See the resources below for more information.

<description>That&#039;s going to be a bit tough unless you mount some kind of file system to store data. You can&#039;t write anything, not even temp files, to the cd.

Here&#039;s a link that explains how to mount a filesystem like Window NTFS. http://linux.web.psi.ch/livecd/access_disk.html

You could also allocate disk space to a linux partition and mount that with your live cd.

Here&#039;s another article that explains how to put a live cd distro on a USB key and create a writable /home partition on it, too. http://linux.web.psi.ch/livecd/usbdisk.html
