Have you run the liveCD – simply started it without trying to install? What happens then? If you get to a working desktop, install from there.
If none of the above happens – read the friggin error message and write it down, and do a google search on “ubuntu errormessage” to get the answer.
I have installed Ubuntu on at least two dells without a problem.
You could also do something radical, like a google search on “7.10 yourcomputer” and see if it is operator error or if there are others who have had similar problems, but have also posted solutions.
