yes ofcourse you can load the contents from a usb device and you can use the usb storage medium for extra storage space and save the settings you have made during the live cd session to it.when booting ubuntu select the option to boot as to save the settings after you complete the session so that next time you need not again configure ubuntu to your computer settings.you can share the hard drive from windows,you have to activate folder sharing option in windows,create a home network in windows and other computer,copy the network setting to your usb storage medium and copy it to linux.if want to use the cd drive during live cd session copy the contents of the live cd(i.e.ubuntu) to ram,then u can use your cd drive,if u want to use your HDD u have to mount it.
