    It is call G-New-Sense and it is a pun. I recommend that, if you have little experience with Debian, to use one of its derivatives, Ubuntu is very popular, Morphix is smaller and less overwhelming. The original live CD, Knoppix, is a Debian derivative.

    Even if you are an open source zealot, you can always use vrms to remove any applications that do not meet your standards once you do a hard disk install.
