Windows keeps displaying the stop error “PROCESS1_INITIALIZATION_FAILED” when booting. Ran chkdsk several times with no luck. While using a Linux live CD, Linux can not mount the drive. Has my hard drive definitely gone bad?

There is a very good chance the drive is dead. There are so many factors it’s hard to know for sure. It could be a problem with the IDE controller on the motherboard, a cable, or the power supply. I would recommend either trying a different hard drive in that computer, or attaching that hard drive to a different computer just to make sure.
