Is it ok to leave a live CD running?

I don’t want to turn of an hp laptop with1gb memory hooked up to an ac adapter, since it has no hard drive and must run from a live CD, and i already have the configuration I want (in case you’re wondering, it’s Linux Mint Daryna). But I don’t know if overheating would be cause for alarm. I’m not talking about a few hours. I’m talking about a few days (maybe tonight, tomorrow, tomorrow night, and maybe the next day). But if it’s a bad idea to even leave it running overnight, then I kind of don’t want to to do that.

  1. it’s okay if you are there to monitor it, otherwise i would leave it turned off or on “sleep” or “hibernate” mode.

It would be fine to do that, absolutely. Just be aware of overheating as you said. Your computer should be turned off for at least one full day during a seven day week. To make sure it doesn’t overheat, keep it in a cool area, and maybe put a small/medium fan blowing on the laptop at all times so no hot air collects.

  4. it would be good idea putting it in the coolest room in your home. Normally if a laptop overheats to a major condition it will automatically shut off (mine does anyway). My recomendation would be: put it in the coolest room in your home with (if possible) a surge protection power adapter and rise it off the ground with two pieces of wood (one on either side).

  5. okay, so you are running linux on an hp laptop – right?

and you have one gig of memory in it and you are running a linux live cd because you dont have memory?

are you running with kde or gnome? it come with gnome but some chose kde over gnome.

is your platform ubuntu gutsy or something else?

you have enough to run it on your system with one gig of memory unless you have lots of other things installed in your kernel.

what size ram do you have?

i know i am asking YOU questions and not really answering yours, but these are all relevant to the response you will receive.

by the way, i would NOT suggest running linux from a live cd but only use it for the install process.

let me know if you have questions for me as well – i am a network engineer by trade and run linux on all my boxes and never had a problem with any of them
