Get 9.10. Seriously though it might be some sort of a driver issue and it just stalls where you’re at, the newer one (9.10) might have the correct driver to get past there.

If I were you I would go with karmic. It’s more likely to be up to date with your computer, and is likely to have more bugs hammered out.
Mint is also a great ubuntu based distro
