I think your theory is right, your mom broke the laptop when she hit it. All the violence and computer cruelty probably short circuited one of the fiber optic cables or damaged the hard drive. Tell her that Kubuntu doesn’t damage hard drives and it was all her fault. To treat the problem you must bring it in to an expert or you can fix it your self. I’ve never heard of anyone who would hit their computer, was your mom drunk or something?
You are going to have to purchase a new hard drive if you want that computer fixed. They aren’t that expensive though.

Call Toshiba the hard drive is probably under warranty.Make sure they send the restore dvds.No money but new hard drive ,problem solved I hope.
