You don’t say what distro of Linix. The 4gig sounds like a full suite such as Ubuntu Studio (which burns to DVD). To get started, try the latest Ubuntu — link below. It’s 4meg. Learn a little bit about Linux, research and make the system you want.

No, that’s not right. Try knoppix, it’s a version of Linux that runs of a CD. Just set your Bios up so that it looks for the OS on a CD before looking at the hard disk. Some Bios’s are already set that way. I got my knoppix off a CD attached to a computer mag and it worked fine. http://www.knoppix.org/

I’m not sure what you’ve got there… So I’m going to start at the top. If you would like to try Linux, first you must find the right distribution that will match your needs and level of use. (Some are easier to use than others.) You can go to http://www.zegeniestudios.net/ldc/ and take a test that will give you a list of Linux distros that match you.
The two that are the most user friendly are Ubuntu and Mandriva. Google them to find their web sites, and more information on them. When you decide to download one, burn it to a disk. It will fit on one cd, and that cd is now a “live” cd (meaning you can run the OS from the cd before putting it on your hard drive). On your “live” desktop, there is an install icon. If you decide you like it, install it and your off.
I’m not sure where you were pointed before so I’m going to give you the two links to download either OS.

If this is your first time using Linux, expect problems and expect to have to find solutions. Linux is very strong, very small and very fast and as a command line driven OS, it leaves no room for error. (The two dristros I mentioned are GUI interfaces.) However – it is fun, free and because it’s open source, the possibilities are endless.
Enjoy, and have fun!
