how to install opensuse when i have windows xp installed on the system?

I tried the live cd of opensuse 10.3 and i now want it installed to my pc.But i am worried about my data.I want both xp and suse.But i cannot figure out how to do partition of hdd to make both OS running and no data loss at all.I am new for linux and i face problem in figuring out what is /root and swap and whatever i cant understand.Please someone help me out.As i have a old pc i have speed problems.but i found opensuse faster than xp.I’ll appreciate if someone can clear my doubts.
