Get http://www.mandriva.com/ (far better than Ubuntu), burn the iso, enter in the BIOS and choose the following boot order: 1 – cd-rom, 2 – hd, boot from the Live-cd, configure the pc the way you want (it will save you some time and hassle since it will be installed with them), click Install (from the desktop), select Use entire hd, select as file system ReiserFS if you can (i think this option is gone in the latest version) and everything else will be automatic.
When prompted allow it to reboot and remove the Live-cd.
