  1. compiz fusion is the standard desktop manager for 7.10 if you run the iso disk you’ll see it. but be aware that to get the full effect speed wise you’ll need to install 7.10. i suggest getting an older computer and using linux on it till you are familiar enough with it to install it on your primary computer. 7.10 will do anything that windoze can do but it’s faster and more stable than windoze.

  2. I am not convinced that compiz runs from the Ubunu liveCD – give it a shot. (I had to set it up on my Ubuntu harddisk installl) It seems to me that it does run on the Knopix 5.1.1 (+-) liveCD, so give that a try if it isn’t in Ubuntu. But Knoppix may be using Byerl, which I understand it being sidelined.
