  2. First off, although 2000 is a bit outdated, it’s still a good (for Windows) OS. However, many (if not most) of the recent programs already won’t work on 2000; this can be expected more and more as time goes on–especially with the recent release of Vista. Just so you know what to expect.

Now as for Ubuntu; there are way too many advantages and disadvantages to Ubuntu (and to Linux in general) and differences between it and Windows for me to list here–but I will list the ones that are, in my opinion, the most important.

It is not as straightforward as you might think to compare Windows to Linux. Most Linux users will tell you that Linux is faster, safer (you pretty much don’t have to worry at all about viruses, spyware, or any other malware), more stable, more powerful, and some will even say more user friendly than Windows; but really, this (with the possible exception of being faster and safer) is only true after it has been set up. Another big advantage to Linux is that it is usually free (Ubuntu is completely free), and nearly all software for it is free. The biggest problem with Linux is hardware and software compatibility. Since over 90% of computers in the world run Windows, most hardware and software manufacturers simply don’t support any other OS. This means that some experienced Linux programmers must reverse engineer the drivers for a lot of hardware, and write software from scratch before they can be used.

Personally I started using Ubuntu a few months ago. With a lot of work, I now have all but three pieces of hardware working completely (two of which are working somewhat), and I have only a couple other problems. Keep in mind, however, that I haven’t been working on fixing these problems too frequently, and I have had to get my dialup modem working (dialup modems are one of the least compatible types of hardware with Linux). I really like Feisty; it fixed a lot of problems I was having in Dapper and Edgy.

Here’s what I recommend you do: VMware seems complicated to me, so instead you can just use the live CD to try Ubuntu out and see how well it works with your system. You can choose to either download the Feisty live CD at the link below or order it for free. Once you have it, put the CD in your computer and reboot. Once it’s loaded, you can try things out and see how well it works without changing anything on your hard drive. Since it’s running off the CD it will be MUCH slower than it would be if you installed it, and nothing you do will be saved after restarting, but it is a great way to try it out.

From there, you can choose to install it (there is an icon on the desktop) if you want. You can choose to install Ubuntu alongside Windows, so that you are asked when booting which one you want to use (this is what I do). Although you shouldn’t lose any information if you do this (I didn’t), you should backup important data just in case. If you have the room on your hard drive, you may want to install it in this way even if you don’t necessarily like what you see while using the live CD–a second OS can be very useful if Windows ever crashes.

Here are some more links you may find useful. The first one has some great information about installation among other things. The second is a link to the official Ubuntu forums; this is a better place to ask questions about Ubuntu than here, plus most questions can be answered just by searching the forums. The third has even more information that could be useful.

As for ‘cortez keybording championship’, I’m not familiar with this software, so I can’t tell you anything specific, but software designed for Windows will not run in Ubuntu. However, some Windows programs are able to run by use of software called wine. The link below has some information about using wine.

    Hope this helps.
