Just today a book fell on my laptop and now when i turn it on it tells me that the internal hard drive disk cannot be found. i contected dell and they referred me to a professional compay but they estimated about 500-1700 for recovery. i was wondering if anyone knew of a method that might work without sending it to the professionals? someone i know mentioned a linux live cd. what is that and what would that do? thanks

Take it apart and make sure it didn’t knock the plug lose first!
other than that sounds like it broke the hard drive,if it dose not work you can not get data off of it yourself

It may just be the internal drive came loose from the connector. Look on the bottom or sides, there should be a cover about the size of a 2.5″ laptop hard disk (length or width, depending on the location). There should be one or two screws holding it in place. Removing the screws should be able to let you pull the entire drive unit out and reseat it in the connector. Before you spend money on recovery take it to a BestBuy or CircuitCity and have them troubleshoot it. It sounds to me like it could be something simple like that, but no promises.

The “book fell” is what puts you in a bad spot. Actual physical damage to the hard drive makes data recovery difficult and expensive (no software will help if the drive is “busted”)
A first step, may be to take the laptop to a local (reputable) computer service store and have them take a look at the hard drive – see if it is actually damaged. You may have damaged some other part(s) of the laptop that is preventing it from actually reading the hard drive.
Or for likely a similar price to having a local shop look at the hard drive, you could buy and adapter and cables to allow you to connect the hard drive to another PC like a USB drive. That does require you removing the laptop hard drive.
If the drive itself really is damaged, the price they are quoting you doesn’t sound out of line with the market. You may be able to shop around and find a bit better price. Although my recommendation would be to go where the vendor suggests.

I am not sure you lost the data, but as a pesonla experience. once my laptop fell out my hand and the same thing happend when I took it for a check they told me the HDD hade fell out of its cradle. And a live CD is an operatng system which doesnt need to be installed on your PC or laptop. when you enter the CD and boot your coumputer the CD (which is boot able) boots up the operating system. There are many of these operatng systems and some have extreemly power full tolls for recovering data.
