The Fedora 10 is probably a live cd, but there isn’t an “official” Slackware live cd. If you’re looking for a Slackware live cd, try Slax:

I’m sure they are on separate disks, Slackware is pretty big and requires 3 cds or 1 dvd.

Try it out!
Put the disc in your optical drive and boot from it.
if it is a live cd, it will give you the option of trying out without installing it else it will just start the installer, in which case, you can just exit it.
you might be able to download fedora live cd off of their web site, i don’t think slackware has a live cd, but I am sure fedora does.
If you are new to linux and want to learn how to use it, i’d say go with slackware, it is more tricker/difficult to install, but you will learn a lot in the process.
But if you are just wanting to use linux for mail and web surfing, install Fedora.
