  1. Okay.. just..
Get Linux Mint 8 Helena insted of Ubuntu for now.. That will take care of the multi media thing. You can go ahead and install all that stuff but takes too long. Mint 8 = Ubuntu but not quite as stressed about everything being FLOSS ware, so you get some media stuff that Ubuntu doesn;t provide out of the box, plus it doesn’t look like baby poop.

There isn’t time or room here to explain what Linux can do that windows can not. The short answer is nothing. Both Linux and Windows are fully capable of doing whatever it is you want to do on a computer, but Linux lets you see how it all works. Oh.. and there is just tons and heaps and piles and masses of free stable powerful software for pretty much any danged thing you can think of. There is that. That counts.

Now.. on to your main Q. Can Linux help recover your data?
Absolutely yes as long as the drive is still recognised by the computer as being a drive.
It may be as simple as botting to a live cd, mounting the drive and then copying everything you care about to an external USB hard drive. Or it may be get more intricate..

What MIGHT just happen, and I have seen it many times is that if you actually go ahead and INSTALL Linux on your computer along side your broken windows installation without wiping out the WIndows install, the GRUB boot loader may very well detect your windows install, mount it as an option for boot, and actually make the whole darn thing just work again.

If ALL ELSE FAILS just remember that
    Recovery Is Possible:
