Computer Virus- Live CD?

I have a computer that has a virus/adware/spyware on it. The computer has Windows XP on it. The virus has basically infected the windows registry, so, because I am not an advanced user, I don’t know how to remove the virus in Windows.

Is there any live CD Linux distrobutrion that has a virus scanner that can update from the internet and fix the viruses?
I tried AVG, but it won’t let the user log in. I CAN use Windows, but the processes that start up won’t allow the virus/adware/spyware scanners to delete the problem. I have already tried Spybot S&D and Ad-aware. The viruses also apparently made Norton unusuable, for it will not start up. It says that I have to reinstall, but I don’t have any of the origional CDs, including the Norton and Windows.

If you cant even get into Windows you will probably have to re-install windows. If you have your original CD you should be able to do this. Look up re installation of windows on google. If your not comfortable doing it a computer shop shouldn’t charge very much if you have your original CD.

First of all, Windows Defender is a SPYWARE program NOT a virus program! It also has other security features but it is not a virus application.

Secondly, how are you sure you are so horribly invaded? How do you know it is in the Regristry? Linux is a differant OS than Windows, so I doubt very much any product which runs on that program will work on a Windows OS.

Now, how do you know you are so infected? I had an infection one month after purchasing my last computer which completely crashed and burned it. There was no booting up, period.

If you are able to do a regular boot up, then I am wondering if you are infected. What makes you so sure this is the situation? Did you run one of those so called Regristry checks or scans and it came back telling you that you have all these errors and viruses and you have to purchase their key to fix them? That is such a hoax. Don’t fall for it. You obviously can get booted up, AND get online, so I am really doubtfull of your having a virus. I think somebody is trying to fool you or scare you for some reasons of their own and not for any good purpose.

I suggest you do a Google search for those free, yeah I said free, Anti-virus soluctions. I have heard really good things about them. Then install one.

Download and install the free Windows Defender anti-spyware from Microsoft too. Turn on your free Windows Firewall as well. With the free software you should be fine.

If you want to do a quick virus scan right from your system go to http://www.pandasoftware.com

There solutions cost money, but I have found them very good. They also have the only insurance for any hardware damage by a virus and it is for a maximum of $1,500.00
NO kidding! They also do daily updates, and I really like them. I have them istalled on all my computers and my families computers.

except my sister who has a mac, and they don’t need virus or any other threats. Anyway, get some type of anti-virus software, download and install Windows Defender the anti-spyware program which is free. Go to the Microsoft.com and then click on downloads. You will find it there.

I hope this helps, good luck to you!

    I have two possible solutions.

    1. Download and burn to CD BartPE*. This program has several antivirus and antispyware pre-loaded.

    2. Go to the following web site and use the online scanners** listed at the site.

    3. Post a HJT*** log and have an expert review your system.

You should run your AV programs from Safe Mode with Networking. This will maximumize your scan and allow you to update your antivirus.
