yes it is an operating system, i think it’s much better than mac OS but that’s just my opinion, you can get a linux install cd from ubuntu.com, you can install it parallel to mac os so that you can choose which os to boot up with a menu then you first start , but you must remember one thing, windows 7 beta is the best os in the world, i can only imagine how good the final release will be.
i would get windows 7.

VMWare Fusion is a very clever program which allows you to run another operating system inside MacOS. It can be any operating system you like, and need not be limited to just one: on one of my Macintoshes I have Fusion set up to run Windows 98, Windows 2000, XP, Vista and Fedora Linux (not all at the same time, of course, for memory reasons). On my Macbook Pro, I have BootCamp set up to run XP, but instead of having to drop out of Leopard and restart in Windows, I use Fusion to start XP from the BootCamp partition very quickly. So yes, there is no problem with experimenting with Linux inside OSX when you already have a Windows setup
