I have a Compaq Presario PC and am trying to dual boot with Linux and Windows, but I don’t know what they refer to as CPU on their sites. My computer is a Compaq Presario and the number on the bottom of the front of the actual computer is S5314ST. If anybody could tell me what it is, how to find it out, or if i could run Gentoo Linux that would be great.

CPU means Central processing unit
for most linux distros you need about a 600MHz processor, I am sure yours is well above that, and you should be able to run it just fine, but try a live cd first (linux runs off a cd, and does nothing to your hard drive)

your CPU is your processor. It will be measured in ghrtz or mghrtz…you can find it( in windows)by going to control panel then system info….good luck

Since Linux can run on a number of hardware platforms, they offer many versoins. I have a compaq presario PC also. That means I run Linux on an x86 system.
Do not get MPC (Motorola -Mac) or 64-bit version of Linux. They won’t work for you.
I agree that a test with a LIVE CD is the way to go until you area ready to partition your current system for dual boot.

I’m not familiar with Gentoo, but Linux usually has a program call LILO which will allow you to boot multiple operating systems.
Linux can run even on an old Pentium computer, so you should have no problems.
Whenever you need help with a particular Linux distribution, it is best to get help on their web site. There is usually a forum where you can ask questions and you can download/view documention about installing Linux.
This is your computer:

This is Gentoo’s web site. Click on the ‘Installation Docs’ link. Click on the ‘Discussion Forums’ link too.

CPU – Central Processing Unit – commonly called the “processor”.
FIRST, suggest you try a “live” linux CD, which will run from the CD without affecting your computers OS at all.
IF you want to set up a dual boot system you need to have at least 1 additional “partition” on your HD and preferably 2 for your Linux to run on.
To set this up on an “existing” system like your Compaq, would require a 3rd party program to “resize” your HD and allow room for the additional partitions.
Considering the first question you asked, I suggest that you have someone more knowledgeable help you or do it for you.
NOTE: I have a machine with a 20GB HD that has 7 OS’s on the SAME drive, BUT I have been doing this for over 30 years, and know what I am doing.
