I had the same problem…
I bought a computer with a half installed Windows system on it…
Put the CD in the drive…
While rebooting press F10 (in my case…)
Then choose boot from CD and install it…

I’m not sure but I think you can boot up into “safe mode” and then try to install it that way.
Again I’m not familiar with the live cd – but wouldn’t that be bootable and then you can format and install Linux that way? It seems odd to me that a Linux disk would depend on an installed Windows operating system to be installed itself.

If it runs Windows, it WILL run Linux – as long as you have the x86 (or x86-64/AMD64 if you have more than 3GB of RAM)
Please keep in mind that Linux falls under the GNU licensing terms and so, it won’t come bundled with things like Adobe Flash Player or any other commercial software preinstalled but, it is easy to install. Also, don’t try and use Windows programs on Linux as they are *NOT* compatible (unless you have a copy of CrossOver installed)

You don’t need Windows at all to use or install Linux.
Just set your BIOS to boot from CD and then stick Linux Mint in and reboot.
It can run completely off your computer’s RAM (again, doesn’t need Windows or the hard drive). And if you choose to install it, you can install it right over Windows (don’t need to uninstall or activate Windows).
And Linux Mint does come with Flash and other proprietary codecs preinstalled, contrary to what that other person said. Not all Linux distros do, but Mint does.
