I have a regular PC with 797MHz AMD Athlon XP processor and would like linux (because everything is better with the penguin) but I need to hear from the people who know.
1-I do not want live CDs/DVDs
2-I am willing to reformat the drive.

I prefer Red Hat.
The only problem I have had is they changed the definition of
extern int errno;
in their header files in version 9 to the equivalent of
#define errno (*_errno)();
extern int (*_errno)();
version 8 and before was fine.

The big advantage in switching to Linux is the freedom it gives you to try different versions at any time for no cost.
Simply download any distro you might like and try it.
First time users should probably go for either Ubuntu or OpenSuse.
Once you are happy with the way Linux works , then you can try other distros to see what different things they offer.
Enjoy , and welcome to a world without windows.
