It depends on the hardware. Different versions are more successful with different hardware platforms.
Try U/k/xubuntu. It will probably work fine. PcLinuxOS has an intereseting “load in RAM” feature, so that might be of interest to you as well. There are others – Knoppix is THE liveCD standard.
Your best option is to get Ubuntu, works on all platforms.
