   dsl is real handy knoppix 3.3 is handy any ubuntu based distro is just great all around

   It depends on the hardware. Different versions are more successful with different hardware platforms.

   Try U/k/xubuntu. It will probably work fine. PcLinuxOS has an intereseting “load in RAM” feature, so that might be of interest to you as well. There are others – Knoppix is THE liveCD standard.
