Accessing hard drives on a computer with a broken OS?

Ok my computer crashed and I had to restart it, which resulted in some corrupted system files. I tried a few ways to repair the OS (windows XP SP3), but didn’t have much luck, so long story short, now I want to backup my files so I can do a clean installation.

I’ve already tried using a windows live and linux live ubuntu CD to access my hard drives, which where both successful except that I can’t see my user account files in the “documents and settings” folder, i.e. when I go to C:Documents and Settings, I can only see the “default user” and “all users” folders, and not my own user (user which holds folders like “my documents and settings”, “my pictures”, etc)

I need a way to access those files so I can create a backup, after all, most of my pics and videos and a bunch of other stuff which I treasure greatly are all there and I can’t access them =(

Can anyone help me? thnx
P.S.I didn’t forget to check the “show hidden files” option, so I know that’s not the problem lol.

  1. If the hard drive is NOT the problem, you can remove the hard drive from the machine and extract the data manually.

You can take it to a computer repair shop and they can do it for you, but they will charge you a lot more.

To do this, you will need a way to connect it to your new laptop. The easiest and cheapest solution is get a USB Hard Drive Adapter. You can get them at Fry’s electronics or online stores. Best Buy MIGHT have them but I am not sure. You can get a cable or an external enclosure. They do the same task either way, the enclosure simply provides additional protection for the drive. If you remove your hard drive, be sure to keep it away from static sources (carpet most especially).

Before you buy a USB Hard Drive Adapter, you need to find out what type of hard drive it is…SATA or IDE (aka PATA). If you dont know how to find out, google some pictures and you will see. Once you know the type, get that type of adapter, ask the guy at the store if you are not sure.

One end goes on the hard drive, the other end goes in the new computer. The hard drive will appear as a removable device in your MY COMPUTER icon, or similar depending on your OS. Browse through the drive to locate the files you need, then just drag and drop.

Once you have everything you need, disconnect the drive and save the cable for another day.

  2. Get an external hard drive enclosure, prolly for a 3.5″ drive. Put it in then you’ll have to go to another computer to plug it into and then you’ll be able to see everything. I had to do it like that once.
