I’m using Windows XP, and have decided to try out Ubuntu Linux. I plan to try the Live CD first, and later maybe install it.
I have a few questions:
1. I read somewhere that the ‘Live CD’ will not require any installation . Will this Live CD allow me to use Linux the same way as if it was installed in the computer?
2. I don’t know a lot about computers, can I still use Linux?
3. Any steps/precautions I should take before installing ubuntu (besides backing up necessary files)?
4. Any step by step guides on installing/uninstalling ubuntu (in case I get into trouble) ?
1) If you have got a live cd, and but it in cd bay and restart the computer, it should automatically install Linux in computer’s RAM and let you run linux. The advantage of a live cd is that it does not permanently install linux on hard disk, therefore when you exit the program, it should be automatically uninstalled. However try opening the cd while still in windows and read if there is any help file in it.
2) You can use linux almost like windows, it is a good way to learn Linux this way
3) At the moment experiment with the Live cd, and install Ubuntu later when you have sufficient knowledge of how linux is installed in dual boot option over windows
4) For the time being stay with the live cd, so you do not get into trouble. There is no way to uninstall linux once installed on the hard disk, you will have to format the hard disk and install windows again if you want to do so.

Hi, welcome to Linux World!
1. The same as the guru suggested and said
, there are other versions like knoppix! (i have worked with it, but actually u will be a little disapointed because u cant explote all the functionality of Linux, but for making tests and little labs is great).
2. I think that u tried to say that if u can still using Windows, sure!!, u can, it wont install anything!!!
3. The same than the guy that wrote upper me!, buuuuut if u plan to install the normal ubuntu, u must (as u said) backup all, and then, defragment ur hard drive (in order to avoid loose information or destroy program files), and make a partition to install linux. Be sure that when u r installing Linux, u r not overwriting information in ur Windows Partition!. BE SURE that u are adding Windows in your Boot Manager (as lilo or grub) or u wont be able to choose which OS u want to boot.
4. Uninstalling, well…, if u install the full version of ubuntu or other linux distribution, u must rewrite the mbr (master boot record) and repartition. Is easy with a Windows CD. Just insert it and thats all, delete all partitions (this will delete all ur information in windows too)
Hope it will help!
Regards!!!
