Hi, there is no Xp live cd from Microsoft so it will be impossible to install it because even if someone made it they could have not put an installation software in. On top of that its pirated.

Are u sure u r not using Linux Xp, there is a distro like that looks like Xp. If its that then an option for installation should be in some menu.

Good Luck!

Linux will most likely still run. You get get live versions of Linux such as knoppix etc that boot and run entirely from the CD. This gives you a chance to test Linux without making any changes at all to the laptop.

Comment on Computer logging/locking issues? by ForensicGirl

After a certain amount of bad attempts you should see a hint for the password.

If you didn't have a password, just hit enter with nothing in the password field and you should be logged back in.

Windows VISTA can also be configured with lockout...to change the threshold...
Open the local computer policy, expand Account Policies, and click Account Lockout Policy. In the details pane, double click Account lockout threshold.

If you are completely stuck you could contact Microsoft, you could reinstall windows (ouch!) or you could get a password cracking program such as : Ophcrack which comes in a live cd... or Cain and Abel which is a program you would need to be logged in to install, or you could install on network share and run... or use a linux cracker...

I am not sure why you would see caps and not see typing without... i would've told you to make sure you are clicked into the box... but... still make sure...

If something "funky" is going on with the computer you could do a hard reset (hit the power button until the computer shuts down and then reboot). This may correct the typing problem and allow you to type in the password.

good luck.

The answer is no... reason, unless the two systems are exactly alike then you will have problems with the drivers... and hardware..

if you download any version of Linux you can boot up from the live cd... on any machine,, and you can do everything running from the CD.. after you get used to it then you install it

Linux is a free operating system that puts MS Vista to shame.. and all the software you'll ever need is also free....

I would suggest you use www.google.com to search on "compaq yourmodelnumber linux" and see what other people have tried and had most success with. Some distros may install better on your particular machine than other distros. I would start with THAT distro (even though I think Ubuntu is great!). Your selection of that distro would increase the likelihood of greater user satisfaction. You can always change distros after you have some experience, and discover a reason to change.

Initailly, dual boot so that you can fall back on Windoze if need be. Wait six months before removing XP, if ever. I have been dual-booting between Linux and Windoze for 8 years +. I still find Windoze worth keeping - if only for games and the really rare, occasional problem with formatting a document (received from others, not created by me).

Hi, since u r starting of new right now I would suggest get Ubuntu Linux because of their excellent community support. Once u get used to using Linux u can find another distro if u wish and install that. Get Ubuntu Linux at:
http://www.ubuntu.com
All the info u require can be found at their website, and they will explain u how to install best from their own documentation. You will like Linux a lot more than Windows and even more than Mac OS X. Believe me I have used Mac OS X and its nothing compared to Linux. Linux and OS X share the same core which is of Unix so u can install some Mac OS X software as well.
Good Luck!

Just a couple of days ago I tried Ubuntu Linux and in my opinion it is simply super. It works fantastically on my laptop. You can try its Live CD without installing the system on computer and decide for yourself later. However, I strongly recommend installing it as I am a satisfied user. Its email client Evolution, Akregrator - the RSS reader. For music XMMS is super. Good luck!
